The virus that causes cardiomyopathy (broken heart) syndrome in salmon is present in egg fluids and milt

Some fish that die as a result of cardiomyopathy syndrome (CMS) are often identified at the end of the production phase in sea water. In its Fish Health Report, the Norwegian Veterinary Institute cites 107 cases of CMS in 2014, and reports that this is the fourth year in succession that the number of proven cases of the disease has increased. But where does the piscine myocarditis virus (PMCV) that causes CMS come from? This is one of the questions we are trying to find answers to as part of our R&D work.
